Semester End Review - Spring 17-18
From Zero to One-hundred-sixty-three
ENTR101 started as a class-focused Facebook Page for students to interact outside of class. We put learning materials and guest speaker videos on there as well as on Youtube. It worked fine within the class, but we soon realised our videos can bebefit more people if we branded ourselves towards the world. So we upgraded our logo, video format and also opened our Instagram.
Since February, we grew from 30 to 163 followers. Mostly acquired organically as we did not spend much on paid advertisements. The effects of paid ads were undermined by the change of Facebook's newsfeed algorithm. In the coming semster, we are going to diversify and be more specific on ad targetting, e.g. target UST students only.
During this Spring semester, we have invited various distinguished guests. The lineup is as follows:
SHOPLINE, Tony Wong - How to build a positive work culture in a start up? Apart from telling us about the relations between his viewpoint and his journey, Tony also suggest how the students can prepare for their future.
ShopEasy, Terrie Fung - Starting from buying a bed for her child, Terrie turned the idea of helping others into her brand-new business. Let's know more about how she overcomes the hurdles and go beyond her identity as an all-time housewife all these years.
9GAG, Ray Chan - "There are a lot of big words about business, e.g. monetization. I think it is about 'how to make money'." Ray talks about 9GAG, other social platforms, copyright, competitors, and the skills he has learned from college being applied to the startup world. Instead of directly giving advice, he shared with us what he would have said to his young self.
Steven Lam, GoGoVan - "If something makes you feel uncomfortable, don't settle. It's ok to be uncomfortable for once. Then, go and look for something else that truly makes you happy." Steven finds his own way to survive with his "carpe diem" attitude and DIY spirit. He shared with us how he and his friends (a.k.a. other co-founders of GoGoVan) dug the gold with iPhone, and how they turned the difficulties in delivering lunch boxes into a chance of building a billion-size platform for many people's convenience. He also talked about how they see their competitors.
Vincent Tsui, Toast Communication - Marketing influencer Vincent Tsui (徐緣) introduced us two major concepts: Content Marketing and Honest Marketing. Having worked in a media company before, Vincent has his ideas on combining advertising and media, so that he creates the company to achieve his goal. Vincent talked about content marketing, its difference compared to traditional ideas of marketing, and how the way to do the marketing is important. He also talked about what content marketing meant to him.
Ben Cheng, Oursky - "Maybe I can start a company and try to see if I can run it differently than anybody else even in this post-capitalism society." With this belief, Ben and his 2 co-founders started the company 9 years ago. He shared with us how/why they came up with the idea, and how they see/treat their interviewees/colleagues.
Tsz Wing Chu, Dreamstarter - "We are not preparing our students for a job. We are still using teaching methods or materials fifty years ago." With the drive to turn a crippling school with just 6 classes for the whole primary form, Mr. Chu, the then newly appointed pricipal, managed to turn the situation around with the notion to give children, teachers and also parents the ability to dream.
