Seoul-cial Innovation Series (2) - Life after 50 years old
Ever wondered what happens if you have reached 50 years old? In Korea, the hardworking employees are required to be relieved from work. It's company policy as well as required by law that they retire immediately at 50.
Weird, eh? In Hong Kong, there is no official retirement age but the government requires recently recruited civil servants to retire at 65. So what do the Koreans do when they reach 50? Some would open friend-chicken shops (typical business for them according to statistics) and fail to breakeven afterwards. Since the retired population is facing not only financial burdens, but their sense of accomplishment on the emotion side is also decreased, they need a way to channel their time during retirement.
